Sad news arrived out of Owings Mills Monday evening, as the Ravens announced the passing of franchise icon, O.J. Brigance. The former Ravens linebacker and front office executive was 56 years old:

A member of the Ravens Super Bowl XXXV championship team, Brigance remained with the franchise as the Director of Player Development, a role that he accepted in 2004. In 2007, he was diagnosed with ALS, and would eventually lose the ability to walk and speak.

Despite this, Brigance continued in his role with the organization, and became an activist for ALS research through his Brigance Brigade Foundation, which you can donate to here. He was a presence throughout the building for the remainder of his life, and served as a constant source of inspiration for the coaches and players, which you’ll see on full display in this beautifully done tribute video the team put out in his honor:

A Rich History with Baltimore

While “Juice” as he was affectionately known around The Castle is best known for his time playing for the Ravens and subsequent advocacy for ALS, he has a deeper connection with Baltimore football that predates even the Ravens organization. After a successful college career at Rice, Brigance joined the Canadian Football League’s BC Lions in 1991, eventually signing with the Baltimore Stallions in 1994 where he’d become a CFL All-Star, and Grey Cup Champion in 1995. This was Baltimore’s first pro football Championship since 1970, and the only one between the Colts departure for Indianapolis in 1984, and the Ravens arrival in 1996.

His performance with the Stallions caught the eye of the NFL, and the next season, he signed with the Miami Dolphins where he would be named team captain twice, and win the Ed Block Courage Award in 1999 after a four year run with the team. He would also earn the NFL Player’s Association’s “Unsung Hero Award” that season, which was his last in Miami.

In 2000, Brigance returned to Baltimore, signing with the Ravens as they caught lightning in a bottle, and went on to win Super Bowl XXXV in shockingly dominant fashion. He was a key contributor for Brian Billick’s squad that year, chipping in 25 special teams tackles in the regular season, and adding on another 10 in the postseason that included the very first tackle in the Super Bowl win over the Giants.

A Legacy That Will Endure

Tributes to Brigance have poured out since the announcement of his passing, with many of them highlighting his relentless positivity in the face of such difficult circumstances. The Ravens team account posted multiple statements from figures within the organization that he had an impact on throughout the years, including owner Steve Bisciotti:

The first preseason outing has come and gone for the Ravens, and the content train for Baltimore Film Breakdown has begun moving ahead towards a full steam pace. With not much news to break down from a slow Sunday in the afterglow of game one, let’s take a quick look at everything we’ve put out, and get you caught up on all things Ravens football to get your week started.

In yesterday’s Opening Drive, Cole had the pleasure of actual game film to offer analysis on, and he opened things up by looking at some risers and fallers based on what we saw on Saturday night. Some of the risers (Ja’Kobi Lane, Vega Ioane) were fairly obvious ones, but there were some pleasant surprises that made the list, like rookie QB Joe Fagnano. There are also some players we’ll want to see more from moving forward like Aeneas Peebles, who’s going to be relied upon at a thin position.

FILM ROOM: The Debut of Vega Ioane

Our first live fire film room of 2026 features Cole making the video he’s been waiting all offseason for: a look at the debut of Ravens’ first round pick, Vega Ioane. This is one you don’t want to miss, as Ioane (the highest picked offensive lineman for Baltimore since Ronnie Stanley in 2016) was expected to look like every bit the part in his first time officially suiting up for the team. While there were some things to clean up, the highly pedigreed youngster lived up to the billing with a clean outing that included one or two highlight reel moments - check out the above video to get the full rundown.

As far as pivot points on this roster, there may not be a more high profile competition for the starting role than at the center position. Jake sat down to take a look at the starter in this game (and potential starter for the regular season), Danny Pinter. He came away pretty impressed by what he saw, and ran through five clips of some positives, and some things for the seventh year veteran to work on.

Offensive line has never been the sexiest position group in the NFL, but it’s certainly one of the most important. That’s doubly true for a Ravens team that has seen some shaky play at positions along the line the last several seasons, and paid dearly for it with big game blunders, and injuries to their starting quarterback.

You can’t blame too much of that on former starting center Tyler Linderbaum, but unfortunately for Baltimore, the Pro Bowler priced himself way out of their market, and they’ve found themselves starting over at the position. One of the candidates to take the job is seven year veteran Danny Pinter, who comes over from Indianapolis with a nice combination of experience, and still untapped potential.

Offensive line coach Dwayne Ledford has talked up Pinter’s athleticism, and some of the exciting things he’s seen on tape from the 6’4", 305 pounder. Veteran guard John Simpson has been equally impressed, recently noting Pinter’s mental handle on the position that requires a lot of X’s and O’s acuity:

"He's been great, man," Simpson said. "He's coming in, communicating well, just knowing his stuff, and he's playing at a level I feel like where we can get up there. He calls it out, and we just go, and that's what you need from a center."

As a possible nod to him having the inside track at the starting job which he’s mainly competing with Ethan Pocic for, Pinter got the start in the Ravens first preseason game against the Eagles on Saturday. There’s some good and bad to dive into, but after the two series he was on the field for, it’s hard not to walk away pretty encouraged by what you see.

The Ravens opened the preseason with a convincing 24-7 win over the Philadelphia Eagles, but the final score was far less important than what happened further down the depth chart. With Baltimore resting most of its established starters, Saturday night provided an extended look at the players fighting for roster spots, larger roles and position on the depth chart.

Several players who had already generated buzz during training camp carried that momentum into M&T Bank Stadium. Others used their first extended game action to force their way into the conversation.

Here are my biggest risers — and one notable faller — coming out of Baltimore’s preseason opener.

RISERS

Ja’Kobi Lane, WR

It’s hard to believe Lane’s stock could rise much higher after the camp he’s put together, but he somehow managed it Saturday night. Lane caught all three of his targets for 38 yards and a touchdown, including a 16-yard score, while showing good separation and making a pair of tough catches over the middle in traffic.

The Ravens have been waiting to see whether the camp hype would translate when the lights came on. Lane gave them a pretty convincing answer.

Matthew Hibner, TE

Baltimore’s tight end depth has generated some concern throughout camp, making Hibner’s performance particularly encouraging. He caught all five of his targets for 61 yards, including a 29-yard gain on a wheel route where his speed and separation immediately jumped off the screen.

Hibner looked comfortable as a receiver, showed reliable hands and gave the Ravens something they desperately needed in their TE room.

The Ravens have moved to 1-0 after a 24-7 routing of the Philadelphia Eagles in the Next Flight era for both Jesse Minter and the Ravens uniforms. However, the score didn’t reflect how the game felt. The Ravens were absolutely dominant, outgaining the Eagles 440 to 159.

The real catch, and stop me if you’ve seen this movie before, was that the Ravens lost the turnover battle 2-0, including an INT on the goal line that kept the score closer than the game felt.

Nonetheless, it was the Ravens rookie class that stole the show with most members of the 2026 class earning at least one highlight in their first professional game.

Here are your preseason game 1 notes:

Offense

• Tyler Huntley had a very solid debut with mostly a second team offense. Huntley exited after going 6/7 for 76 yards, including a long of 29 and taking 2 sacks, both of which were quick pressures

• Third string Joe Fagnano had a very noteworthy debut finishing the day 22/28 for 224 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. The INT was an obvious blemish and a good rookie mistake to learn from. Coming off the bootleg on the goal line nothing was open, but Fagnano tried to force a ball to Xavier Guilliroy, but Kelee Ringo’s impressive range saw it the whole way.

After a wild offseason with more twists and turns than an acclaimed piece of Russian literature (I’ve ready plenty of Russian literature, trust me), Baltimore Ravens football is officially back on our television screens tonight. In some form or fashion, that is.

Preseason football is what I would call “for the sickos,” a product not heavy on entertainment value or important storylines, but rather a pure love of the grind - not just the grind that is the sport of football, but the grind that it takes to try and make it as a professional athlete in general. Dreams are made and broken in these strange, simulacra of NFL football that populates our TVs at odd times throughout August, and that’s something worth watching in my humble opinion.

For this Ravens team, there’s plenty of open competition on the roster to make things spicy. So rather than provide a preview of the game overall, or single out a few storylines to track, I figured I’d focus on one thing I’d like to see from each position group on this team - each of which has been duking it out in practice for the last few weeks, and some of which don’t have a settled starter yet.

This game (or any of the others) may not prove to be the deciding factor in said positional battles, but getting off to a solid start certainly won’t hurt anyone. So without further ado, let’s get into just what a solid start would entail:

Quarterback

We already know Lamar Jackson won’t be suiting it up in this game, and that the share of snaps will be split between some combination of Tyler Huntley, new signing Austin Reed, and Joe Fagnano. I’d like to see two things from this group: a clean, injury-free start from Huntley, and something to think about from the other two guys.

We know what the Ravens have in “Snoop” at this point, and after some of his heroics from last year (and the two year contract extension they earned him in March), we can safely pencil him in as the backup quarterback this season. Beyond him, it becomes a question of, do the Ravens roster three quarterbacks? Reed is fresh off the street after a run in the UFL, and Fagnano is the relatively unknown rookie who’s just hoping to make the roster; I’d like to see one of the two (or both) of them make a case for why they should be on this roster in Week 1.

Preseason football is always a little weird. The score doesn’t matter, most established starters won’t play much — if at all — and whatever happens Saturday night will largely be forgotten by the time Week 1 rolls around. But for the players fighting for roles, trying to climb the depth chart or attempting to turn a strong training camp into something tangible, these games absolutely matter.

That’s especially true for a Ravens roster with several legitimate competitions still unfolding. Some players are trying to win starting jobs, others are trying to prove their development is real, and one rookie wide receiver is trying to show that the hype coming out of Owings Mills can translate when the jerseys change colours. With that in mind, these are the five Ravens I’ll have my eyes on against Philadelphia.

1) Ja’Kobi Lane, WR — Putting the Hype on Tape

This one might seem unfair, so let me be crystal clear: Ja’Kobi Lane isn’t under pressure in the traditional sense. He isn’t fighting for his roster spot, and one bad preseason game isn’t suddenly going to erase everything he’s accomplished throughout training camp. But when you generate this much hype in August, eventually everyone wants to see it translate to a game.

Ravens fans have spent decades waiting for a mid-round receiver to develop into a legitimate contributor. We’ve had plenty of camp darlings along the way — Jordan Lasley, Jaleel Scott, Tandon Doss, Tim White — and the list is almost as depressing as the quarterbacks who started for Cleveland over the last two decades. That history is part of what makes Lane so fascinating. He has legitimate NFL measurables, outstanding ball-tracking ability and a knack for adjusting to throws that has already produced some ridiculous circus catches in camp.

The question surrounding Lane coming out of USC was whether he could consistently handle NFL physicality. It certainly hasn’t caused him many problems in Owings Mills, but Saturday gives us our first opportunity to see him against somebody wearing a different jersey. The hype is already there. Now it’s time to start putting it on tape.

Training camp rolls on in Owings Mills, Maryland as the Baltimore Ravens have been at it for weeks now. To this point, they’ve only battled civilly among themselves, but that will change Saturday as they square off against the birds up I-95 North when the Philadelphia Eagles come to town. Saturday will mark the first time in his life that Ravens offensive coordinator Declan Doyle calls plays. On Wednesday he took to the podium and provided his perspective in a variety of ways.

"The No. 1 thing on game day is that the play caller gets the play into the quarterback as fast he can with confidence in that play call, and make sure that the operation can operate," Doyle said. "No. 2 is the communication aspect with the coaching staff, with the players.

Doyle referenced legendary coaches like Bill Walsh, Sean Payton (who mentored the young coach), Sean McVay, Kyle Shanahan and Ben Johnson throughout his availability.

While referencing these brilliant offensive minds, Doyle next spoke to the necessity of getting plays in quickly if he decides to call plays from the box, or prioritizing direct communication with his quarterback if he opts to spend game-day on the sideline. There’s a tremendous buzz about the way Doyle operates in practice, how he speaks and represents himself, how he seems to have reinvigorated Lamar Jackson, and what his offensive players have said about him throughout the summer. Wide receiver Zay Flowers, in particular, has spoken highly of Doyle in both local and national availability.

It’s August, everything is dandy, everyone has Super Bowl aspirations (except the Browns and Jets) and everyone is singing Kumbaya. In reality, Declan Doyle has never made second half adjustments against the Kansas City Chiefs or Pittsburgh Steelers to try to put a game away. Despite his age, he’s experienced in the NFL. As green as Doyle may be, at the end of the day, he’s walking into a fantasy scenario. A first-time offensive play-caller has a two time MVP quarterback in his prime handing the ball to a likely first-ballot Hall of Fame running back who has racked up nearly 4,000 scrimmage yards and 34 touchdowns in the last two seasons. No one has ever walked into a situation like that as a first time play caller. As the captain of this beautiful offensive ship, Doyle needs to simply avoid getting drunk behind the wheel and playing slalom with icebergs like the Titanic. It was an eventful Tuesday at The Castle in Owings Mills, but not for the reasons that we would’ve hoped when we woke up yesterday morning. The headline news of the day revolved around an injury to a prominent player that had fans (and presumably the team brass) on pins and needles, while some other updates we received were on the less than positive side regarding practice performances from an important skill position. All of that, and some other updates from the podium are on the docket for today’s Opening Drive, so without further ado, let’s get into it:

Nate Wiggins Carted Off

To paraphrase the great Ozzie Newsome, you can never have too many cornerbacks on your roster. It’s a smart idiom to fall back on, and one that is constantly proven true due to the physical, laterally explosive nature of a position that often finds itself in the midst of collisions, and mid-air fights for the football.

The Ravens front office once again found themselves turning that phrase over in their minds as their star player at the position, 22 year-old Nate Wiggins, was carted off of the practice field during Tuesday’s practice:

This led to a nail-biting few hours of waiting for updates, as Wiggins figures heavily into Baltimore’s plans as a key piece of Jesse Minter’s defense. Entering his third season (and into his physical prime), Wiggins had three interceptions in 2025, and is currently listed as a starter at left cornerback on the Ravens defensive depth chart, per ESPN.

The words “carted off,” “knee/leg,” and “ton of pain,” are never ones that you want to see in one tweet when describing a player leaving the practice field, and a mad scramble began to try and determine the severity of the situation. Minter provided some context later on in his press conference:

Hearing that Minter was optimistic was a small sign of comfort, but without further concrete information available, the possibility of something longer term still remained - for a bit longer, that is. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport tweeted a few hours later that Wiggins’ injury didn’t lead to any structural damage:

Training camp injury scares are never fun for anyone, least of all a player like Wiggins, who is approaching negotiations for his second contract in a year or two. Thankfully, it seems like something serious was avoided here, though the Ravens will no doubt be careful with the young defender in the coming weeks.

Behind Wiggins on the team depth chart are veterans Marlon Humphrey, Chidobe Awuzie, T.J. Tampa, Amani Oruwariye, and more unproven names such as Chandler Rivers, Bilhal Kone, Keyon Martin, and Robert Longerbeam. Removing Wiggins from that mix suddenly makes Baltimore look pretty thin at this position, so that leaves food for thought on A) how they should manage their starters throughout the rest of camp, and B) what they can do to improve the position before Week 1.

Jesse Minter and his staff aren’t just figuring out who starts — they’re determining what the bottom third of this roster is going to look like and which players actually fit what they want to build in Baltimore. There are legitimate competitions at center and WILL linebacker, but there are also battles further down the depth chart that will ultimately determine special teams roles, defensive packages and who survives cutdown day. They might not generate massive headlines in August, but these five battles could quietly have a significant impact on Minter’s first season in Baltimore.

1) Starting Center — Who Fills Out the Reworked Interior OL?

Arguably the Ravens’ biggest remaining need after free agency was at center, and instead of using another premium draft pick on the offensive line, Baltimore opted for a veteran-heavy competition. Former Colt Danny Pinter, former Brown Ethan Pocic, former Falcon Jovaughn Gwyn and third-year UDFA Corey Bullock make up the four-man battle for the job.

This might also be the most consequential competition on the entire roster. Baltimore invested $30 million in John Simpson and used its first-round pick on Vega Ioane, completely rebuilding the interior of the offensive line around whoever emerges at center. With Dwayne Ledford taking over as offensive line coach and run game coordinator, the Ravens need someone who can handle the mental responsibilities of the position while also fitting the movement-heavy run game they want to establish.

Cole’s Prediction: Given Pocic’s missed time and the fact that he’s working back from a significant Achilles injury, I think Danny Pinter starts Week 1 against his former team. Pinter fits the mold of the outside-zone-heavy scheme Ledford wants to implement. The question is whether his lack of a consistent anchor in pass protection will hold up — particularly in the AFC North, where Baltimore will regularly see some extremely physical interior defensive linemen.

“In 27 years of covering the Ravens, I’m not sure I’ve seen a rookie have a training camp quite like wide receiver Ja’Kobi Lane.

Every day, Lane produces a highlight-making catch. And today, he has Derrick Henry leaping in the air in celebration.”

ESPN’s Jamison Hensley posted that statement on X, fully propelling the Ja’Kobi Lane hype train into terminal velocity. That post has 2.3m views as this newsletter is being created. Ja’Kobi Lane hasn’t practiced, yet alone played, against an NFL defense outside of Baltimore. That post created a ripple throughout the NFL landscape. The rubicon has been crossed. The boats have been burnt. For preseason, this is event horizon.

Lane was a highly touted 4-star recruit out of Mesa, Az. He declared for the NFL Draft as a true Junior, following a highlight filled and productive, yet streaky tenure, in terms of box score production, as a USC Trojan. The Ravens selected him in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft, and scouting reports touted him as a contested catch specialist who lacked route running polish requisite of a first-round prospect. With the reports coming out of camp, Lane’s combination of size and athleticism at the catch point are paired with nuanced ball tracking leading to acrobatic adjustments in tight windows. This type of skillset is something the Ravens have desperately chased in their receiver room, particularly in homegrown fashion, over the last 30+ years. Last year, we saw Deandre Hopkins prove to be a ball winner at the catch point for Lamar Jackson, especially early, which was something relatively unseen throughout Jackson’s time in Baltimore, especially.

Lane measured at 6043 at the NFL combine. He registered a 40-inch vertical paired with a nearly six-foot-nine wingspan and massive 10.5 inch hands. Let’s not neglect a 4.47s 40-time, either. Lane is long and explosive. That’s showing up paired with his ability to stack and adjust to the football late, then secure catches including ones of the spectacular and one-handed variety.

Considering it’s still just early August, the Lane hype-train couldn’t be louder. However, it’s August! Over the years, training camp has lied to fans, fantasy football team managers, and likely teams themselves. Ja’Marr Chase was a bust by this time in his rookie camp. More locally, Ravens fans have bought into the likes of:

• Tommy Streeter

• Aaron Mellette

• Kamar Aiken

• Jaleel Scott

• Miles Boykin

• Tandon Doss

• James Proche

• Michael Campanaro

• Jeremy Butler

I personally was a victim of Miles Boykin dominating his rookie training camp. I might’ve even said he reminded me of Calvin Johnson at times… Boykin looked like one of the best players on the Ravens roster that summer. It was a lie. He didn’t even achieve 500 total yards throughout his two seasons in Baltimore. In fact, that entire group amounted to 4,501 career yards. Kamar Aiken accounts for nearly half of that. The Ravens, in short, have left a boneyard of failed mid round receivers who never met the summer hype.

The heat and humidity settled over Owings Mills on Thursday morning, with temperatures climbing to 91°F and the heat index pushing toward 100°F. Fittingly, the temperature on the practice field seemed to rise with it, as the Ravens turned in one of their more physical and chippy practices of training camp, complete with a few post-play dust-ups.

The conditions also took their toll. Several players were clearly feeling the effects of the heat, while iDL C.J. Okoye was forced to leave practice early due to the conditions.

Defense Reclaims Momentum in Chippiest Practice Yet

After spending much of the past week watching the offense string together highlight after highlight, the Ravens defense answered emphatically on Thursday. Trey Hendrickson continued to look every bit like the impact addition Baltimore envisioned, recording another sack, while Keondre Jackson broke up a pass intended for Matthew Hibner. T.J Tampa also forced a turnover by ripping the football away from Rasheen Ali after the catch as the defense swarmed to the football throughout the opening portion of practice.

The intensity eventually boiled over. Carson Vinson and Tavius Robinson got tangled up after a play, leading to one of several post-whistle scrums that prompted Jesse Minter to stop practice and address his defense directly. Moments later, another confrontation erupted between Mark Andrews and Hendrickson before Trenton Simpson stepped in to separate the two veterans.

Every training camp reaches the point where fatigue, competition and roster battles collide. Thursday felt like that day for Baltimore. While coaches never want unnecessary penalties or distractions, a little edge isn’t the worst thing—especially for a defense trying to establish a new identity under Minter. It’s a good sign to see the defense fiery after a few straight dominant offensive practices.

After a weekend of high profile stadium practices, and a big event like the Zay Flowers extension on Tuesday, it’s natural there would be a bit of a comedown in terms of hype and excitement around Ravens camp in the following days. Still, there’s a bit to dive into today in the wake of said extension, and some other small happenings around Owings Mills that warrant some notice.

Most prominently, Flowers spoke to the media for the first time after signing his new deal (he wasn’t made available on the day of the signing), and discussed his emotions around committing to Baltimore for the long term. Outside of that, it was a quieter day of practice in the rain, a player returned to the practice field at a pivotal position for the team, and some interesting comments circulated on social media regarding Zay’s extension, and how it might affect his quarterback’s future in Baltimore.

Giving Zay his Flowers

After officially signing his extension on Tuesday, and the news making it’s way around social media, Flowers wasn’t immediately made available to the media to discuss the good news. Instead, a press conference came on Wednesday that allowed for the star wideout to discuss the extension with 24 hours’ time to digest it all.

He opened with comments that thanked the Ravens’ front office for taking a chance on him, the fans for always having his back, and with a token of appreciation to Baltimore:

Perhaps most interesting of Flowers’ comments were his effusive praise of Eric DeCosta and company for taking a chance on a player out of Boston College, a school that has produced some stars, but isn’t at all a prominent contender in the college football landscape. Reports during that draft cycle indicated the Ravens were hot on Flowers as early as the Senior Bowl, and the entire draft process felt like simple prelude to Baltimore picking him at 22nd overall.

It’s a great story of having a vision for a player, landing him at a good value proposition, and executing on said vision with commendable competence. And the exciting thing is, it really feels like this partnership is just getting started.

Flowers will turn just 26 at the start of this season, and now finds himself in a new offense with a renewed sense of energy percolating through the building. The architect of that new offense, Declan Doyle, made it clear how excited he is to get to work with the new $140 million man:

“He is really integral in what we are trying to do,” Doyle said, when speaking with the media following the announcement. “He has embraced all of the spots that we have put him in, and we are only continuing to grow there. You want to make sure that you are not too heavy in one area. At the same point in time, you want to make sure that your guys are touching it — the mouths that need to eat, you have to feed.”

Flowers is Lamar Jackson’s number one target on the field, and is very close with the two-time MVP off of it. With some uncertainty hanging in the air surrounding Jackson’s contract status, there’s an argument to be made that a signing like this could work in Baltimore’s favor as those talks continue.

Mike Florio of PFT has made a cottage industry out of discussing Jackson’s contract status(es) over the years, and has certainly brought in plenty of clicks to his site when sewing doubt about whether Jackson will remain in Baltimore for the long term. Interestingly enough, he speculated after Flowers signed his deal that it could work as a positive in the negotiation between Jackson and the Ravens - considering how Florio usually steers that conversation, it’s definitely something worth noting:
